Mazda 3 XD Astina 2014
It’s unusual to find a best diesel automobile in its breed. According to custom, they come from Europe. Usually, they come from somewhere in the Volkswagen family.
But this is a diesel champion from Japan and also an obvious and present danger to diesel-powered Golf which is Carsguide’s favorite sport. This makes the diesel available in the latest Mazda3, a vehicle that is topping popularity with car buyers and one of the favorites for this year’s Vehicle of the Year award.
TECHNOLOGY
It also makes it a Skyactiv turbocharged diesel, with a focus on efficiency and includes hybrid stop-and-start regenerative brakes to cut consumption down to 5.0L / 100km.
There’s a six-speed manual gearbox with sweet shifts as well as a six-speed Skyactiv automatic that Mazda claims is the best combination of a conventional, dual-clutch and CVT manual transmission.
CONTROL
But the big surprise is that the XD Astina is the performance car in the Mazda3 lineup, at least for the casual driver, thanks to its taut and perforated chassis from the end that turns a zigzag road into an animal track taste.
It’s much easier to play in a car with a lot of maximum torque these days, as traction makes performance more accessible. And it’s not nearly as loud as a high-revving motor letting everyone know what you’re doing.
In the case of Astina diesel, you can both relax in a quiet and wet cabin while trying to achieve the best 0-100km / h sprint time possible. And the Mazda3 offers an exciting side, with a modern and airy cabin, plenty of standard equipment, and a strong feel and overall quality that only Golf beats.
VALUE
The standard equipment is extensive, reflecting the 18-inch alloy petrol SP25 and in terms of safety is a complete set: airbags, reverse camera, radar cruise control, blind spot monitor, warning obstacles ahead and warnings of vehicles crossing behind.
There is, of course, a downside. That’s the price, starting at $ 40,230 and high for a compact car. Then again, you can think of it as a relative bargain compared to hot-hatch rivals that are not much faster than real-world Mazda diesel.
Skyactiv engines even use a lower compression ratio, the reverse side of the gasoline engine runs with higher compression for better efficiency. After spending time with the rest of the Mazda3 lineup, and having a while behind the wheel of a compact and impressive Mazda2, what I like most about this model is that it’s a car that works with me and always. do that.
The manual gearbox is smooth, the seats are comfortable and the cabin is quiet with easy-to-use infotainment and all the standard stuff I like and expect.
I like the solid feel, even if it’s not as luxurious as a Golf, and I like Mazda has a reputation for service and customer support in Australia. Something I cannot say about Golf.
The prices are not good, and I wonder if it is too high for people in the small car class. It’s more expensive than a Golf, and that says a lot.
I also struggled to match fuel consumption figures, though I had no trouble getting into the 6.0L range and that means it’s super economical for long distances.
