Volvo V40 T5 R-Design 2014
The other day I passed the longest school building in the world. It goes on like this, kilometer after kilometer – 40km / h all the way.
At least it came out that way, until we realized our Volvo was the root of the problem?
SIGNAL
The V40 and other Volvos are equipped with a system that displays the current speed limit as part of the speedometer.
The Road Sign Information System uses a camera mounted on top of the windshield to read and identify speed signs – standard signs anyway.
Trouble is our car is fixed on a bus we ride behind – you guessed it – has a 40km / h sign on the back.
Other than this little glitch, it is an intelligent system that takes into account changes in the current environment, such as a temporary road limit that fixed map-based systems cannot.
However, it is unable to read the variable electronic speed signs found on the highway.
LOOK AT THAT ‘
Volvo’s V40 hatchback is arguably the most beautiful car in its segment.
With its low, rugged stance, prominent taillights and a black painted rear door, the design is an improvement over its predecessor C30.
Appearance is of course a matter of personal preference but we think the V40 looks better than BMW’s 1-series hatch and better if not better than the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is scoring at the time. current point.
NEW ENGINE
In this iteration, the turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder on the T5 has been replaced by a smaller 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Drive-E, which develops most of the power and torque. twisted.
The new engine developed 180kW and 350Nm, after 1500 low revolutions – compared to 187kW / 360Nm before.
It is mated to a new 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, complete with shift paddles – with a front-wheel drive function. The previous 6 speeds without paddles.
POLESTAR
Sorry, the Polestar upgrade isn’t available yet.
They are still working on the new Drive-E engines.
Volvo says Polestar upgrades are not available on VEA (Volvo Engine Architecture) engines, “at this stage”.
SLOWER
With an exact weight of 1468kg, this new model is much slower than a volume of 6.3 seconds compared to 6.1 seconds for a speed of 0-100km / h.
The difference is probably not that noticeable unless you drive the two cars back.
However, the new engine delivers better fuel consumption, at the announced 6.1L / 100km compared to the previous 8.1 – with carbon emissions of 142g / km versus 189.
WHAT DO YOU RECEIVE
There is no change to the front of the device.
Includes a variety of R-Design sports details, including fabric / leather combination sports seats, sports chassis with adjustable steering, automatic emergency braking (AEB) up to 50km / h, sensors Rear parking as well as rear view camera and 8 – speaker audio with Bluetooth streaming and full iPod connectivity.
The satnav warning system with a speed camera is approaching.
HOW TO GO?
The power is there when you need it, but most of the time it feels relatively normal.
When it comes to sport mode, the engine response is even smaller and even more so, if you start using the paddle to shift gears.
Going on 18-inch alloys can be a bit harsh at times and it lacks a good exhaust note.
One of our big mistakes was fuel consumption. After more than 1000 km of holiday driving, we easily got 9.1 liters / 100km – not close to the claimed figure.
With a new engine and more versatile eight-speed automatic, we’d expect a much better result.
Tinkerers will love three different themes that completely change the LCD panel, but the one we address is Performance as it includes a large digital speedo smack in the middle of the screen.
Plenty of safety gear has been fitted to our test car, especially with the optional $ 5000 driver assistance package, including blind spot warning, lane departure assist, and steering assist car parked.
The rear seat can be folded down to convert the hatch into a wagon when needed, with a space-saving accessory (not good for travel).
Identify
Priced from $ 50,400, it looks great, especially in “Volvo” blue, with LED daytime running lights, dual exhaust pipes and 18-inch black alloys. Runs well and comfortably, but we recommend the optional package that includes active cruise control – God’s gift to holiday driving.
